Ben Zen Interviews 'OM Daddy' About His Music & Record Label

OM Daddy’s electronic music journey fascinates me, my fascination with his music allowed me to peek into his world and this is what I found.

In under just 5 years, he went from scratching his dads' Jimi Hendrix  records to mastering the North America house music DJ scene as a young 17-year old loaded with 5 crates of records and an arsenal of funky dance music knowledge. His mentors he watched perform alongside him every weekend were innovators like Nigel Richards, Donald Glaude, Josh Wink, & Garth. If that  wasn’t enough, he’s also a Kundalini Yoga Teacher, certified  hypnotherapist/master hypnotist, & Icon Collective alumni from their very second class. And now this year in 2017, he’s  founded a new record label called Anahata Love Recordings to  pump out his piping, hot, Funky House & Tribal-Tech-House tracks.

Establishing Anahata Love in the Fall 2017 to integrate the philosophy of the  heart chakra's all-encompassing qualities of compassion, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, self-love, self-care, and love for others  across distant cultures through the universal sound of funky house music was a by-product of something he had been putting of for awhile. OM Daddy had always known it was his purpose and mission to operate the record label, but had found himself deeply immersed in healing the world facilitating energy work, hypnotherapy, Reiki, and even massage therapy, to the benefit of many happy clients in need of healing. Just this year  in 2017 he has already pumped out over 100 releases including several Top 5 Beatport Charting-Releases, some charting in the Top 5 concurrently.

His story is nothing traditional, flipping the usual DJ journey on  it’s head in his pursuit of passion, adventure, travel, and good times.

“A little about the man they call OM Daddy…”

Jim Carson began his DJ career during the resurgence of the rave culture in 1997. Constantly spinning in demand music - Acid House, Breakbeats, Progressive House, & even Trance - across Southern California forged his career in the LA underground, desert parties, and
forest parties of the second wave rave scene while also maintaining a strong presence of the nightclubs of Hollywood and their legendary, balls-to-the wall, afterhours like Nympho where he would brush shoulders with the likes of Prince's main dancer Carmen Electra & other celebrities including Dennis Rodman, Bon Jovi, Mila Kunis, & Wesley Snipes. After consistent gigging for a few years, he earned several residencies at legendary at all-night dance parties “Liquid Butterfly” in Century City, Nympho at Sky Sushi, Garden of Eden, and Godskitchen at The Key Club now ONE OAK. Impressed by his Liquid Butterfly residency and rising star, Vibrations Within also hired him as their key sound selector at raves at The Masterdome in San Bernardino and The Fox Theatre in Pomona. Due to his stellar reputation, he was selected to perform two legendary California festivals - Oracle 3 at  The Orange Show where he closed out the festival with epic Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have a Dream speech" set to funky house music & San Francisco's Love Evolution to 150,000 revelers in the city streets to electro, progressive, & tribal tech house grooves with Amsterdam's Los Angeles division of CHEMISTRY - one of the only floats from outside of San Francisco allowed into the 30+ float parade modeled after Germany's Love Parade.

Progressing onwards to master the North American dance club scene as one of the most inspiring & funky programmers of euphoric dance sets behind the wheels of steel, he’s shared the stage with the world’s biggest dance & urban  music artists in LA, Miami, Chicago, & Las Vegas just to name a few of his favorite cities. Just a few internationally recognized & acclaimed artists are Gabriel & Dresden (Spundae, Circus Disco), Donald Glaude (Nympho/Sky Sushi), Frankie Bones (Cafe Sureal  at E2 in Chicago), The Wu-Tang  Clan (Oracle 3), Little Louie Vega,  Sied Van Reil at Circus, Solarstone at LMD, and DJ Ruff with DJ Peran (Afterhour Power/Avalon).

A Trip Abroad...

Relentless national tours, a near-death experience, and a beautiful Burning Man spiritual awakening inspired him to become a Kundalini Yoga teacher. While maintaining his position as Resident DJ at Circus in the infamous Hollywood mega-club scene, attending Icon Collective Music School & Hypnosis Motivation Institute College of Hypnotherapy, he pursued intensive yoga training with several gurus across California including Dr. Yogi, Sat Rattan Kaur, Gurmukh, Gurushabd, and Snatam Kaur's mother - Prabhunam Kaur, teacher of Mantra & Sound. After 5 years straight in higher learning, college, and master's courses, he decided it was time for a vacation and took off for Big Island Hawaii to the Ecstastic Dance retreat for a relaxing yet intensive week of dancing and contact improve followed by 6 months living in Southeast Asia. He met some awesome travelers in Thailand and Bali and was invited to teach yoga at the W-Hotel - Seminyak, Bali, and the Green School Village in Ubud, Bali while he was there. When he wasn't immersing himself in the local dance & yoga culture, he could be found at temples meditating and learning both Buddhist and Hindu customs & rituals.

One notable memory he recalled was “ringing in the new year” at Potato Head Beach Club listening to house music pioneer Francois K - watching the waves roll in while enjoying the fireworks display to the soundtrack of Francois' lush melodies. Bali connected him with a plethora of world travelers & new friends as he made his way to various dayclubs and beach parties from Canngu to Seminyak to the rainforest locale of Ubud.

Founding Anahata Love…

Returning to the states the following spring, OM Daddy laid his step-father to rest within weeks of coming home. His step-father had collapsed in Las Vegas after several heart attacks and was battling Stage 4 Lung Cancer. OM Daddy rushed to Vegas to be with family and soon after started a podcast focusing on world events, comedy, and yoga, before starting Anahata Love. Then in a moment of clarity & a chance meeting with a beautiful muse who shared his love for Alex Grey's visionary artwork, he figured it was time to start producing music. Question was….What to produce? Actually, there was no question. Where there is love, there is no question. Yogi Bhajan, OM Daddy's primary spiritual teacher who died in 2004 said that, and it remains one of his most profound truths. Where there is love, there is no question. When OM Daddy wakes up in the morning or night depending on his schedule, there is no question where Anahata Love is concerned. Love is a verb, love is an action, you are either doing it or you are not doing it. OM Daddy just does it. Life is short, just do it he says. Inspired by Alex Grey’s artwork which his muse shared an affinity for, he integrated his musical practice with yoga every damn day and began to produce house music and techno. It was on his birthday in 2016, he decided to start the record label Anahata Love to interconnect distant cultures under one love.

Since then, he’s worked with amazing artists, producers, and remixers  from all over the world & his passion for ending racism through connection and music has not let up, increasing tolerance and embracing diversity for all people, he was poised perfectly to lead this new wave of healing house music.

OM Daddy's music has been healing people all over the world, especially his song "People of Color" (world-premiered on Subliminal Radio's "Holly's House" hosted by KRCW's Holly Adams & Subliminal Brandon Anjeleno), which has been especially healing for the city of Los Angeles where we are reminded in the lyrics of the vocal that the racial division and brutality that disrupted our community over 25 years ago has no place in today's society. We need to love each other - brown, white, black, yellow, queer, straight, trans - or whatever you want to call yourself. OM Daddy considers himself a citizen of the world and an ambassador of love & OM Daddy "Light." His hit single "Knowledge & Love" has been remixed by both Riche BoOm of Texas and Paris, France's Jerome Zambino and sends a poignant message in the lyrics which proclaim "What we need is knowledge & love, I'm going to live to fight another day."

Anahata Love’s Rise…

Characterized by their huge, phat, basslines, tribal grooves, progressive  rhythms, & funky tech house, 'Anahata Love' has already created several hit album releases in a short amount of time which comes as no surprise to anyone who knows the tenacity, talent, & passion OM Daddy brings to the table. OM Daddy's love of tribal house & funky dance music is almost as huge as Donald Trump's ego. But make no mistake, it's all about the love, the community, and peace that house music brings to the world which inspires OM Daddy and everyone at Anahata Love Recordings.

Since Fall 2017, two Beatport Top 10 Funky House/Groove/Jackin' House albums have both peaked at #6 in the Top 10 album releases fluctuating from #6-#14 for weeks on end, and in 2018 "Miami Music Week" hit #5 on both the breaks and funky house charts.

"Pimp Respect (I Am The One): Remixes" from OM Daddy  with remixes by Jerome Zambino, Riche Boom, & Tony Largo landed at #6 on Beatport's Top 10 Funky House Charts in mid-November 2017. Then, the massive 30-track release, “Tech House & Funky House Best of 2017 Anahata Love Compilation” soared to the top of the charts at #6 in the Jackin' House & Funky House Charts in late December 2017. At one point, both releases were side by side with one another in the Top 30 at #22 and #27, no small feat or accomplishment for a boutique, start-up, grassroots, independently run record label in LA that just started releasing music on Beatport on August 25, 2017.

Another notable release is OM Daddy's “Feeling Sunshine” (Club Mix) which is charting all over the world right now even after just being out for a little over 3 months already. Remixes from Tony Largo from the legendary afterhours club in Hollywood called "Does Your Mama Know?" have seen support from house music legends like Tony Humphries & other notable godfathers of House Music.

“Synesthesia on Endor” just recently released on December 21, 2017, is a stand out hit with its progressive house 'Star Wars' soundscape & is assuredly one of Anahata Love's best tracks to date.

Anahata Love promotes global artists from Ecuador to France to Italy to Spain to Germany back to the UK & USA. The current Anahata Love roster includes Sebastian Herrera, OM Daddy, Jerome Zambino, Ero Boy, Dyrti Dan, Late Delivery, & Riche BoOm.; and as of last night has just signed a secret-hush-hush new artist of London, UK, plus another local southern California house music legend.

Upcoming releases to look out for: In late January, newcomer “Ero Boy’ has a tribal house remix release. Sebastian Herrera is dropping “Steal Your Wish” which goes exclusive on Beatport for pre-order as of right now & then available everywhere else at the end of the month. Also expect re-mastered past releases emerging from the vault including: “Funky Frank” & “Magic Carpet Ride” & ‘It’s On Baby” & “Midnight Summers Night Dream” which also saw a fabulous, new remaster on "Tech House & Funky House: Best of 2017." Also, OM Daddy's hit single "The Way That We Move" was just picked up for licensing on LW Recordings for their house music compilation "Melodic House Sessions, Vol. 5" being released at the end of January 2018. Another huge win for Anahata Love!

Look out for these new releases & stay in touch here at anahatalove.com, facebook.com/dharamdeepyoga, Beatport, & Traxsource most importantly.

When asked why OM Daddy does what he does as my final question of the interview he looked at me straight in the eye and said, "I do this because of you, I do this for the millions of people out there that need this music. This music saves lives. I'm not a DJ or House Music Producer, I am a healer. I'll never forget when a young mom told me once that my music saved her life after she struggled with PTSD after a failed marriage with a convicted pedophile. When you hear these heart-break-stories, you just have to say, "Screw it! I am losing another night's sleep and making another dance record. This music saves lives. Funky tribal house music is at its core, the most pure & passionate form of heart-opening house music on this planet. It has the ability to heal and soothe the soul like no other."

"Either you are expanding or you are shrinking. I want to expand. Tribal house music expands the heart center and expands your life. It is the gift and beauty of all life - good for your body, mind, heart, and soul. That is what Anahata Love is all about - HEART EXPANSION."
